“In a lot of ways I feel like I’m not making or designing my work. I get into a zone and kind of just surrender to whatever comes out”, @electricadam tells us amidst his residency at the @sarabandefoundation.
From fetish newbie to performance art marvel, his provocative and incredibly emotive work explores elements of sexuality, breath play and control, and have earned him an unexpected notoriety: “I just sat down and started making these rather crudely made pieces and went out to Torture Garden…With latex it’s like the flood gates just opened. It just seemed to be gushing out of me”.
Adam’s art - including a new immersive exhibition to be unveiled this Autumn - is often characterised by handmade structures made from recycled materials sourced from his day job in set design. Structures then cloaked in latex, and vacuumed to the body using his own breath.
A means of creative expression of course, but also an outlet for the artist’s own empowerment: “I’ve always had asthma…after years of feeling so negative about my breathing and how it affected my day to day life, I began to think of it as training. Not many people can do what I can do with my breath”. - Ben Sanderson
